January 5th: The Real Start of the New Year — And the 2-Minute Habit That Changes Everything

January 5th: The Real Start of the New Year — And the 2-Minute Habit That Changes Everything

January 1 looks like a fresh start on paper.

But real life?
Our kids are still home. Work is half-speed. The holidays still linger.

Routines for most don’t actually return this year until January 5 — when school is back, emails are real again, and everyone settles back into normal life.

And that’s exactly why this week is a great time to start new habits that we will actually keep.

🎧 What I learned from Shane Parrish, Farnam Street, and James Clear

I recently listened to The Knowledge Project podcast where Shane Parrish (Farnam Street) interviewed James Clear, the author of Atomic Habits.

One idea landed hard:

Big change doesn’t come from big effort.
It comes from tiny habits that are easy to repeat.

James Clear calls them “2-minute habits.”

Things so small you can’t fail — but over time, they quietly transform your identity.

Not:

“I will completely overhaul my health.”

But:

“Every day, I’ll make one small, smart choice.”

That’s where momentum comes from.

🌱 The 2-minute habit for 2026 that supports your health: Protein + Fibre

Most of us already know that protein shakes are a great way to nourish our bodies.

Protein builds strength — but the secret that I learned is that it doesn’t always help you feel full for a long time.
So cravings sneak back in. Energy dips. You have to rely on willpower to make high quality food choices.

Relying on willpower is playing on hard mode.  Adding premium beta-glucan fibre to your protein:

  • takes less than two minutes
  • helps me feel satisfied longer
  • gently supports gut health
  • reduces the 3pm snack spiral

It’s quiet. It’s easy.
And it’s exactly the kind of habit James Clear talks about in Atomic Habits.

📅 Why January 5 really matters

Today isn’t about grand declarations.

It’s about routines settling back into place — which means habits have a home again.

Protein + Barely. Two minutes. Every day.

Not dramatic. Not restrictive.
Just a system that makes staying on track easier and fits into your life.

🔁 Identity follows action

One of my favourite ideas from Atomic Habits:

Every action is a vote for the person you’re becoming.

Each scoop of Barely is an easy vote for:

  • consistency
  • self-trust
  • health that fits real life

And those votes — stacked day after day — are how 2026 quietly becomes different.
